Inclusion & Individual Pacing at St. John Henry Newman Academy

At St. John Henry Newman Academy, our small-format, cottage school model allows every child to learn at an appropriate pace—academically, developmentally, and spiritually. Because our classes are intentionally small, instruction is not limited by the pace of a single learner, nor is it driven by a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Instead, each child is taught as a unique person, capable of growth according to his or her own gifts and needs.

Learning Together — At Individual Paces

In an inclusive classroom, students may work at different academic levels within the same class environment. This means that:

  • Children who need additional time or support receive it without stigma
  • Children who are ready to move ahead are encouraged to do so
  • Instruction can be adjusted through:
    • Flexible grouping
    • Differentiated assignments
    • Enrichment and extension work
    • Individualized pacing within the curriculum

A child may be learning alongside a peer with special needs while still being appropriately challenged, engaged, and even accelerated in his or her own studies.

Inclusion Without Compromise

Because of our small class sizes and personalized approach:

  • Inclusion does not mean slowing down the class as a whole
  • It does not require lowering academic expectations
  • It does not prevent high-achieving students from advancing

Rather, it allows teachers to respond to each student—meeting some where they are and stretching others further—without sacrificing the peace, order, or integrity of the classroom.

A Natural Reflection of Human Dignity

We believe this approach reflects a deeper truth about the human person: every child is a gift from God, a soul with a unique path of growth. Learning, like faith, does not unfold on a uniform timeline.

By honoring individual pacing within a shared community, we form students who:

  • Respect differences without fear
  • Understand that gifts vary, but dignity does not
  • Learn to walk alongside others without comparison

This is how inclusion at St. John Henry Newman Academy remains both compassionate and academically sound.
